On May 24, 1991, 'Thelma and Louise' hit the road as Ridley Scott's road movie starring Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis found its way into theaters. The movie became an iconic feminist film as well as a commercial success. The movie also put one of its supporting actors on the road to superstardom.

On May 17, 1902, a Greek archaeologist examining finds from the haul of the Antikythera shipwreck noticed a gear wheel embedded in rock. Decades later, examinations by X-ray and gamma ray revealed the bronze gear clockwork Antikythera mechanism to be a complex ancient analog computer. That means it was 2,000-year-old computer!

On May 10, 1872, The Equal Rights Party nominated suffragist Victoria Woodhull for president of the United States. Her candidacy, the first ever by a woman in the US, was derailed a few days before the election because she was arrested on obscenity charges, but she tried again in subsequent elections.

On May 3, 1948, CBS began a nightly newscast, CBS Television News (later CBS Evening News). The show debuted as a 15-minute segment anchored by Douglas Edwards. In 1963 it became the first 30-minute weeknight network news broadcast. Other anchors include Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather, Katie Couric, and Scott Pelley.

On April 26, 1986, an explosion rocked the Chernobyl nuclear power plant as an unexpected power surge causes a rupture in Reactor 4 at the Soviet Union's Chernobyl nuclear plant. The resulting explosion was the world's worst nuclear accident, sending radioactive contamination drifting over large swathes of the Ukraine, Belarus, and parts of Western Europe.

On April 19, 1775, British troops arrived in Lexington, Massachusetts, intent on seizing weapons and imprisoning leaders of a resistance. Shots were exchanged, eight Americans died, and the war for independence was on. Thirteen colonies entered the bloody struggle to break free from the crown as the American Revolutionary War began.
