On April 19, 1775, British troops arrived in Lexington, Massachusetts, intent on seizing weapons and imprisoning leaders of a resistance. Shots were exchanged, eight Americans died, and the war for independence was on. Thirteen colonies entered the bloody struggle to break free from the crown as the American Revolutionary War began.

Today's Fact

On April 5, 1772, which happened to be Easter, Dutch explorers lead by navigator Jacob Roggeveen found themselves 3,000 miles from the nearest continental land. But land was to found - a 63-square-mile island in the southeastern Pacific Ocean which the explorers named Easter Island. Towering stone statues mystified these first European visitors and continue to mystify the world today.

On March 29, 1974, farmers uncovered an ancient 'Terracotta Army' while digging a well in China's Shaanxi province. The site, thought to be the burial site of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China, dated from 210–209 BCE. Excavators discovered an estimated 8,000 life-size clay soldiers, and hundreds of horses and chariots, meant for protection in the afterlife.

On March 22, 1895, folks saw the first screening of a projected movie in Paris. Two hundred invited guests watched 'Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory,' a one-minute film made by Auguste and Louis Lumière with their new creation, the cinematograph film camera. The film, probably the first real motion picture ever made, was shown together with several short clips, one of which startled the audience with the image of an oncoming train.
