On January 18, 1788, the European colonization of Australia began as a convict-laden fleet of ships, known as the First Fleet, arrived in Botany Bay, Australia. The ships said for 250 days from England before finding land 15,000 miles away from home. Around 1,300 people, including 736 deported criminals, began new lives on the continent.

On January 11, 1569, England held its first ever lottery. Chartered by Queen Elizabeth I, the first lottery was drawn in England for benefit of "publique good workes." Later, ticketing rights were sold to brokers, the precursor to what would one day be called stockbrokers.

On January 4, 1974, US President Richard Nixon defied the Senate Watergate Committee's subpoena to turn over recordings he made of Oval Office conversations. This did not help his cause and he resigned eight months later of an infamous incident known as the Watergate scandal.

Today's Fact

On December 28, 1065 (which was a long time ago!), Westminster Abbey in London was consecrated as King Edward the Confessor lay near death. He was unable to attend the consecration ceremony of the church he had commissioned as a burial place and to atone to the pope for a broken vow. Edward died eight days later. The abbey was completed in 1090 but rebuilt in the Gothic style by Henry III.

On December 21, 1913, the first crossword puzzle was published in the New York World newspaper's 'Fun' section. The diamond-shaped grid, created by Arthur Wynne, introduced a new puzzle called 'Word-Cross' that had numbered squares, clues, and simple instructions to fill the blanks. A typographical error a few weeks later changed the name to 'Cross-Word.' That name stuck.

On December 14, 1911, Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen reached the South Pole. He and his five-person team (and 16 dogs) beat English explorer Robert Scott to the pole by about a month. All of Amundsen's crew and 11 dogs returned safely to basecamp in mid-January. Scott was less fortunate. He and his team died just 11 miles from a resupply camp.

Today's Fact

On December 7, 1941, Japanese warplanes attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii in a surprise, early-morning attack. The Japanese sent 360 warplanes to bomb the US Pacific naval fleet and in a two-hour assault killed about 2,400 Americans. Amost half the casualties were aboard the battleship USS Arizona. The US declared war on Japan the following day.
